Community Choir Of Cape Town

The choir was started by the dynamic lady: Effie Saridakis

Effie was born into a musical family. Her late father was a professional Byzantine psaltis all his life, and their home echoed church Hymns with all 4 kids singing with grace the difficult church psalms. Both Effie and her brother George studied music and graduated from Elliniko Odio in Athens. Her brother worked as a music teacher in various High Schools, and now still after retiring, still runs the first-class choir in Dimo Alimou in Athens.

After arriving in Cape Town in 1972, and with great encouragement from Archimandrite Klimis Kapetanakis in late 70’s, Effie built a church choir  with the help of a special couple Dr and Mrs Wise, who was a professional opera singer. Parallel with the church choir she organised a children’s choir and they performed in school functions.

In the early nineties, she played a key role in establishing the Peloponnesian Society of Cape Town. Because The Great Greek Revolution started in Peloponnese, every year on our National day on the 25th March, Effie and her team organised grand functions at the Hellenic club to celebrate this and other ethnic days. Every year they organised different key note speakers who brought inspiration to the Hellenes,  like the late Costa Martalas, Demetri Zitianellis, George Mazarakis, the late George Bizos, and the late Minas Constanmtopoulos. It was during that time, that she created a ladies‘ choir with two tones, bringing a new dimension to the celebrations.

After she retired from her job in the then Bank of Athens  in 2000, she started organising 3 tone voices choir and bringing male members into the choir, this being the arrangement to date.

The choir has not only enriched audiences through the last fifty years but has brought much light and joy to the choir members themselves.

The choir has participated in many remarkable events over the years, to mention a few:

  •  In 2001 the choir participated in “Music, Song and Dance” at the Baxter Theatre, where together with dancing groups from Johannesburg by Mary Vasiliou, talks, that show-pieced the Greek culture.
  • Then in 2004, when the Olympic Flame passed through Cape Town, the choir participated in the celebrations held at a grand function at the Waterfront, together with other groups from Johannesburg – a time of pride and success.
  • In 2004 to celebrate the one hundred years of our Church, we participate in special celebratory dinner at “Kelvin Grove Club” with the presence of VIP s from Greece and S Africa.
  • In October 2018, the choir had the honour to participate in a Cultural evening with the Jewish Society at the Old Assembly Chamber at the South African Parliament.
  • In addition, over the last 24 years the choir has been present in all cultural events in our Community, National Days and Church Services with special guests like Our Patriarch of Alexandria.

We believe that the choir is a crucial tool to present the cultural side of our Heritage.

Effie  teaches her choir members about our great composers - the likes of Theodorakis, Hadjidakis, Xarhakos and also about our great poets and giants of our Literature like Elytis, Ritsos, Seferis and others -  so the second and third-generation Greeks remember where we come from and what  ΠΡΟΙΚΑ, we carry in our roots and lives!

Effie’s wish is for passionate Hellenes (Greek and xeni) to join the choir allowing it to further touch the lives and ears of listeners with their melodic voices. She is also hoping that a committed member will be willing to apprentice her, to learn from her 52 years of experience and love of music, and who will be willing to take over from her  when the time comes - so that this wonderful cultural group can continue to leave  legacy in our Community.
