St George’s Panigiri

Celebrating our Patron Saint George!

On Wednesday last week we commemorated the Feast Day of Great and Holy Martyr Saint George who is the patron saint of our Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Woodstock.

So Sunday 27 April 2025 – we celebrated with a relaxed and wonderfully laid-back lunch at our church hall with all the fixings for lip-licking chicken and pork souvla and hot-day salads.

As always it was a noisy, happy, family-style gathering that was made even more fun with a mini market.

We were entertained by George Dionysopoulos who made our favourite Greek songs come to life on his bouzouki, so next thing, of course, there was lots of toe-tapping, clapping and finger-clicking and dancing happening.

We were also treated to the special St George’s hymn sung by golden-voiced Meletios Kashinda accompanied by Gabriel and Michael Comitis on keyboard and violin and Theodore Psillos on clarinet.

Then we had even more fun when Mrs Effie Saridakis offered an incredibly beautiful hand-made embroidered tablecloth and matching serviettes for a spontaneous auction to raise money for church funds. And it finally went for a whopping and generous R15 000!

But then we went from the sublime to the ridiculous and auctioned off a plump juicy melon for R1000! Bravo!

It was one of those special afternoons you lock away in the joyous memories file.

Huge thanks goes to Mr Chris Yiacoumis, Artemis Michaletos and the rest of our hard-working and caring Committee who made sure we had a grand time.
Hugs and thanks to all the ladies and master-braaiers, backroom boys and girls and all who donated to make it happen.

I have a feeling St George was pretty well-satisfied!
